Does anyone know what happened to the Henderson Matchless with the 4-valve head that Ron Toombs used to ride?

The Henderson Matchless is now in the Auto Racing Museum at Bathurst. There was an excellent article on it in Classic Racer about three months ago. A few years ago the motor was used in a grasstrack racer in the UK. The motor was stolen, and missing for a while. Apparently Tony Henderson managed to retrieve it, and the bike is together again. I don't think we will ever see it race again, anyway what would it be without Ron?

I remember that the motor went to the World Long Track Champs in Russia or Poland or some such - did Phil Crump ride it?
I remember watching Ron Toombs win at PI, despite a blown gasket - fixed in the pits with a sheet of copper and tinsnips. Next race, the thing failed to finish - says Ron 'You'll need more than tin snips this time'
I remember another race at Hume Weir - very wet! Ron Toombs rode the Matchless, a gear higher thru the bends - every time the engine fired, you could see the rear wheel step out. The TZ350s were spinning the rear wheels as quick as blink. As far as I recall, he finished 3rd - I don't recall who won.
Ron was special. |
