I am reading the October issue of Classic Bike. They are waxing lyrical about the wonderful 650cc twins built in the sixties. It occurred to me that there may be a cahnce to establish a class for them to front to Historic racing. What are your thoughts and how would you set the rules?

Surely there should be a class in historic racing that a Thruxton Bonneville would be competitive in? At present I cannot think of a class which you would want to race a unit triumph or BSA, Norton Atlas's are catered for in P3, but Norton Commandos get the backside beaten off them in P4.
I attended the Hartwell meeting at Winton last month, and there were actually a couple of Ducatis there - a pantah and an old 860, why is it we never seem to see Ducatis at historic meets? Are they too expensive to race competitively against the Japanese two strokes?
Let's face it the current formula of only running 'period' events isn't really working that well.
About time to do something new.

Any ideas Alan about how to set up an event for them?

I think these bikes will be catered for if or when we run Formula (historic) BEARS. The problem with all the old British rubbish, is that any Jap two stroke like an R5 Yamaha, T500 Suzuki, or H1 Kawasaki on alcohol, will annihilate them. I think all the guys know this, and people (Ducati owners particularly) won't waste their time racing such expensive bikes in P4 and P5 when they are simply going to get cacked on. The only reason we ride these old British four strokes is that they feel really good, handle superbly, and they are 'real' motorbikes. When I ride my Seeley/Commando you can feel the hair growing on your chest.
I've raced Japanese two strokes, they are excellent, but it's just not the same. I've actually got a TZ350G in the shed, and if Formula(Historic) BEARS doesn't become a reality, I'll be racing It, instead of the Norton. The Norton is expensive to run, and if it's never going to be really competitive, why bother?

if you got enough 650cc twins out together you could build a race series, I was not suggesting having two strokes with them, just 650cc twins, surely something could be set up to assist their attendance. free girls, beer, wet tee shirts, seriously if we all thought about how to conduct a race for 650cc 4 stroke twins I am sure as a sidecar rider cam be that somebody would turn up to race.
