what do people think of my comments made regarding commentary at race meetings which i wrongly put into "self concious"? is it worth further discussion?

Keith, I don't know about nicknames, it's been done on speedway, but it'd help if the commentators could give a bit of a speil about some of the history associated with our A graders. E.g. the fact that John Maher was actually King of Calder on TZs, and was first to use a disc brake on one. And that Greg Johnson was an international rider and fell of Jack Walter's TZ750 at PI at about 160 mph. I don't know what Guesty has done however I believe he was A grade on superbikes. Another thing to comment on is the history of some of the machines e.g. the Ray Berry manx, and the ex Debenham Vincent. It's a matter of getting entrants to submit a page about their bikes when entering for events. Or someone could actually compile a register of machines and riders which could be used by commentators and sold to all our devout followers. |

Yes Keith, we need heroes for the punters. I wouldn't like to see the football hype in historic racing but the crowds would be good. |

G`day Kieth. Good to hear that someone wants to rev up the public interest at race meetings. Perhaps, as you know a number of the regulars at historic meetings, why don`t you start making up some names. How about Bryce Davies on his Rudge. What about Phil Honeycombe with his metho 350 /4 Honda. Or Heather Ellis who likes to put her 500/4 Honda into the ground on a regular basis. We all know of Ross Gymers strange beast that looks like a hardware store. Try Trevor Hurrey who is twice the man I am. The HMRAV put out requests for rider profiles at last year`s Histotrics, we still have them .Perhaps these might be a base to work your idea from.

I'm not attempting to move away from the subject, but about commentaries - a while ago I mentioned that the Control tower at Winton is repeated on FM radio which can be heard for about ten Km radius from the circuit. The other day I actually stood and listened to the commentary at a car meeting. The commentators put over a bit of interesting stuff, then said 'here is some music' and switched the broadcast over to the local radio station. There was no background music when the normal commentary was on, and when the local station came on some horrible racket started. Winton has a CD player (currently under repair) and a fader. The broadcast I heard was most unprofessional because of the use of the local station (on the FM radio you couldn't even tell you were on the Winton station). The point is, I believe the whole commentary facility needs to be reviewed. The background and foreground music needs to be carefully selected, and a couple of knowledgable commentators should be employed. I can't comment on the commentary at historic motorcycle meetings, I've never listened to it, but if it's anything like the car commentary it's doing us a disservice. |
