I've started this topic because of a conversation I had with John, a while back. A lot of us race 'wot we've brung', and that's great. At least the guys are out there doing it. The question I'd like to raise is 'WHAT DO WE VALUE?'.
Andy Molnar manxes cost about $80,000, and Ray Berry must like them - he bought one. I believe the most valuable bike in the world would be the original Guzzi V8. I wonder what its market value would be?
I don't believe anyone in Australia owns a genuine MV3/4 or even an AJS Porcupine.
Our mate Bruce Pederick had a genuine Velo KTT MK8 a while back. Would that be more desirable than a Ken McIntosh 62 Manx Replica?
I'm interested in what you guys believe are the most desirable bikes in captivity, and why you hold your opinions about them.

We obviously didn't value Dennis Skinner's Laverda because it got the chop. The one I'd have really liked to get hold of was Orrie Salter's works BMW Rennsport outfit, how good was that? Even the Nick and Gerry Boret Konig would really be worth getting. (Must be around somewhere!) Forget what's competitive these days. How about bringing out something really worthwhile? I'm not interested in oversize CB750s, they don't do anything for me!

P.S. The guy with the Vincent has got the right idea. I believe Ken Horner's old outfit is about to come out, and Jack and Jim Craig's Vincent is still about somewhere.
These old sh*t heaps are what I want to see (and hear)!

A friend of Allan Greening's (Ross Pirani) rode passenger with Orrie in Europe in the sixties. The agreement was that Orrie would look after him. Ross ended up scrounging food around the pits at the circuits. I don't believe Orrie owned the Rennsport, but he was a bit quick on the uptake, and brought the outfit home to Oz (without permission), where he raced it very successfully, even against 1000cc machines. I believe it might have eventually gone back to the BMW factory. If anyone would know what happened to it, it would be Lindsay Urquardt, he was one of the top guys for BMW over the years.
Orrie had a few good tricks. Apparently when he was in Europe he used to sell mild steel conrods for Manxes - just a rumour.

P.S. the other Rennsport was owned by Jack Forrest from NSW. I believe he's still alive. I don't think you'd ever get the bike. I think the factory gave it to him as a reward.

Garry, Sounds like you might be interested in spending a dollar and buying something really worthwhile. It would be worth a phone call to the Birdwood Museum in SA, and finding out where the 250cc Benelli 4 has gone. A mate of mine (Norm Sharp) had a bike shop in North Melbourne back in the sixties, and got the world championship Benelli on loan for a demo. The bike never went back to the factory. It had no internals in the motor or gearbox, you'd have to make those. But I couldn't imagine Benelli having drastically different gearbox internals in their racer compared with the road bike.
I read in the classic racer where a guy in the US got a similar bike. He wrote to the factory, who said they had 'no further interest'. So he ended up owning it.
Just a thought, but it's worth getting these genuine jiggers going again.
