A Vision for the future Wasted
When I came back to racing I realised that with smaller race entry numbers, minimal crowds and higher costs it was natural that racing as people knew it might change or cease. When the HMRAV moved the Southern Classic from Winton to Broad ford, a shift I voted against, I realized some radical changes to promotion and marketing of Historic motorcycle racing may lift our fortunes, since we were advised that nobody goes to Broadford.
I had a plan that involved assistance from the Shire and local community, working with Motorcycling Victoria, Motorcycling Australia and the trade. Using magazines, newspapers, TV, the web and direct promotion of Historic racing to newer clubs and younger motorcycle community. I also planned to draw on the experience of the Austin 7 club and my other experiences, together with people interested in such a plan.
I figured if we could profitably get about 2000 people regularly to race meetings we could make a profit, keep race fees down and draw new racers from the crowd.
In Jan. 2004 I warned about a possible rejection of sidecars because of low numbers, for which I was admonished, in Dec.2004 I had to confirm sidecars were tipped out of the 2005 Island Classic. In June 2004 I realised we had a problem with 125 solos, but gained little support to increase numbers. In July 2004 I wrote of a need to think about the Philosophy of racing for the future and then we had MA come in with some radical plans and now we have an unresolved issue. My enthusiasm for Sidecars is regularly criticized and yet I don’t see active Solo riders on the HMRAV committee nor many involved in the State Historic management Committee. [ I do have special help from Dave Dickson, Ducati, for the graphics ] When the HMC sought support in writing from riders about the future we received only 6 written replies and additional calls from people who did not have the time to write but expected us to write down their thoughts in our time.
Many people are prepared to give armchair observations of our incompetance but are not willing to put the shoulder to the wheel, too busy I have heard. I see people pulling in all directions.
Today I find myself disillusioned.
I am curious if others either believed in the vision or are just as disillusioned as I am.
