Newbie question:
Does anyone know if "piggyback" shocks are allowed for Period 5 bikes?
Or are there any brands of non-piggyback shocks that have rebound &
compression damping adjustment that are permitted?

you can use early marzocchi or Ohlins off a pre-80 mx bike. these have to be shortened and it costs approx $1300 to have new, larger shafts, springs and seals, but they are brilliant!

You don't have to use old shocks, Stuart Loly one of the front runners in the class did that not realising you could use new piggyback shocks. If you look through the pits you'd see most are using brand new Ohlins, Peter Guest uses WP shocks and some are starting to use an Asian budget brand called YSS.

most of those brand new Ohlins come off XJR1300's and are not that good, with limited adjustment available. sort of like a daewoo version of a merc

I'm currently building a period 5 bike and have been to the 2005 and 2006 Island Classic specifically to see the Forgotten Era International Challenge to see and ask what people were using, most were using new aftermarket Ohlins, I don't recall seeing any XJR versions but did see a couple using shocks off ZXR 1100/1200.

Yes you are able to run piggyback shocks
The pantah's of the period had them
We have run 5 RD 400's last year one of which had piggyback shocks fitted, They are all YSS shocks
We have been involved with the development of these shocks
And have found them pretty good in thier final form
PM me if i can help any further
Regards Sir Al
