G'Day All,
I am keen to race again and I am finding it difficult to get the information that I need to choose and then modify a bike to use. I need very basic info such as what bikes, from what years, are suitable for Forgotten Era? What mods can I do? What IS the Post Classic category? Have you already got all this info posted somewhere that I am too dumb to find? Please help.....
Kobo
PS I haven't raced since 1979 when I used to race a Yamaha TA125 and my Honda 4('76 F1) (for extra laps). I have never stopped riding on the road but it's just not the same as racing.

welcome aboard KoBo,basically your period choices are, period 4 postclassics from Jan63-dec72,then period 5 forgotten era,Jan 73-dec80,then theres new era which i think runs up to 90,split into GP,& road based bikes, don't quote me on that bit,i'm sure someone else will confirm!,again, basically you can modify & use any components/bikes specific to their period is a safe bet,try and get along to some meetings, and see whats going on i guess, postclassic racings pretty stable in NSW ,their club rounds at Oran Park usually!,good luck,n cheers |

The premier class is period 3, and you need a manx or a G50, or a two valve Jawa with a 6 speed box to do much good. It can get expensive! If you want to race Period 4, buy yourself an 1100cc Trex Honda CB750. The races are often unlimited and anything else is pretty useless. The fast big bikes in Period 5 use GS1100 motors, the only 4 valve permitted. New Era 1 & 2 have only gotten off the ground in NSW as far as I know. If you raced a TA125, the TZ250 or 350 in period 5 would be a good way to go. |
Is your machine authentic or merely eligible? |

good one A/C??,you just accounted for possibly 1/2doz bikes ,how many Trex's?,how many GS/X1100'S,get real, theres more to racing than those choices!!,everything else is pretty useless eh?,good recommendation that is for someone KEEN to start racing again!!,forget about the rest 125',250 350,500 etc, just jump in with your cheque book mate, buy the biggest fastest flashest, the rest of us will just make the numbers up eh?,geezas "premier class",not in my minds f***ing eye mate |

Thanks for the information guys. I get the feeling that this is a state based thing - sorry if I went to the wrong area. I thought, from the name 'Classic Motorcycling Australia' that this was applicable to everyone in Australia. Is there a NSW specific site that I should be using?
Thanks again and maybe I'll see you on the track.... |

Do not let others put you off.. There are quite a few from NSW (including ACT), Vic and SA on here, as well as from QLD, WA, NT and Tas, just these sates do not get on as much as they should..

No Mick I didn't keep the TA unfortunately. I found the 'Post Classic Racing Assocition of NSW' site and, after checking their categories etc, I think that I'll be opting for a bike to suit New Era 1 or 2. I could even use my old XJ750 in New Era 1. I have found a 'not too shabby' CBX750 Honda to use as the basis for a race bike but as I'm just buying a house money is a bit tight.
Anyway I'll look in here and keep you up to speed with my return to 'the scene'. Thanks for all of your help and interest everyone and maybe I'll give you a wave as I go around the outside of you, Heh Heh....Lookin' forward to it....

For what its worth if you want to build a race bike from scratch you could do a lot worse than any of the Suzukis up to 500cc, or the Honda 350 twins or 500 fours or slightly harder to find but they are around any of the Kawasaki triples, all are Period 4 and will give you a lot of fun providing you dont over tune them. The main thing is to get to a race meeting and have a look to see what appeals to you then talk to the guys racing them and work it out from there. I would avoid the Period 4 and 5 unlimited classes unless you have buckets of money or dont care where you finish. If you want to get serious and have heaps of fun there is always sidecar racing which is where the real men end up. That should start something up I reckon.

Thanks Alan - Yep, always fancied myself as a swinger but I'm not a great team player. I owned a 500 4 for nearly 3 years - bought new in early '74 and traded on a 750 4 in late '76. It was a fantastic little bike and handled way better than the 750. Everyone likes to win if they're honest but it truly isn't a priority. I just want to get out there and have a ball....
Thanks for the advice tho', Kobo.... |
