G'day all,
Ridden bikes for 35+ years but never raced before.I'd love to get into this type of racing but I'm having a bit of trouble getting info.If anyone can steer me in the right direction I'd be much obliged.

Am wanting to ride a 500 in period 5 but dont know what I can or cant do to the bike as far as mods go...that's the sort of info I'm chasing e.g. If I had an 80 model XT500 Yam can I put any 80 or earlier front end on it??....engine mods ??...etc.

Any info/advise appreciated,
Cheer's Jack.

Jack ..... I know where you can ride/race your bike ... but as to your questions of eligibilty ... others from a higher plane will have to advise ........ [I hope]

Hi Jack,
The best advice that I can offer is for you to join a club and make your way to club meetings and talk to the guys face to face, you will gain a lot of information very quickly that way. The other thing you can do is to go to the MA website and download the Man nual of Motorcycle Sport, all the rules etc are under the Historic section in there.
Get involved and enjoy it is the most enjoyable and safest way to enjoy motorcycling and the guys you will be mixing with are terrific no matter what stae you reside in.
Good luck

Jack, basically you can use any front end (or components)from the same,or earlier periods for that matter!,engine mods are entirely up to you,an XT500 would be an easy bike to start racing with, bin the restrictive exhaust system/airfilter box ,drop the steering stem through the forks,an 18" Yamaha wheel with disc, bingo!,your'e off racing,Patricks'Broadford would be a buzz on a XT,go for it!,cheers

I suggest you start by taking your racer to a Champions Ride Day, do a few laps to get used to riding on a circuit. If you decide you really want to do this thing, join a club with a lot of road racers in it. I'd suggest Hartwell, HMRAV or Sandringham. The Interclub series run some historic races, and you'll be on the grid with only a few bikes, so the pressure won't be on. If you are going to run at the Interclub, eligibility will probably be less of a problem.

As far as engine mods are concerned - bigger is better, and you need to paint it black!

Thanks fellas,
I'll download the rules and have a bit of a read. Can get a CX500 for next to nothing but dont know how suitable it'd be.....Other option is probably an XT500.

Heading bush for a few days and plan on having a rummage through a few mates sheds.....I'll see what I can dig up....

Like a lot of things, there are a hundred ways to go wrong and pay for it. Only a few ways to go right, and find it easy.

I'd like to use an XT....but the maggot is sooooo cheap and I'm on a tight budget..

Really just looking to have a bit of cheap fun for starters...n maybe upgrade later If'n I'm enjoying it....

Got a few mates taking an interest too....be handy for sharing travelling costs...

It's really good if your mates are involved and work together with you.

Hhhmmm........just found a shed full of XT/TT Yam bikes and parts.

Maybe I won't have to get "maggoted" after all...

Sounds good - would be worth trying to have a chat to some of the racers on the fast TT/XTs, just to see what you are getting yourself in for! There are a few trick bikes around, so advice (if they are willing to help the competition!) should be obtainable)

Someone here may be able to PM a contact? Remember, don't post contact details on the thread!

Good luck.
