A while ago I approached MA through Hartwell Club, to see whether we could get 'single event licences' for open historic events. These licences are available for club days and interclub events for $30 each event. As most of us historic racers only ride about three times a year, seems sensible if we pay for that many meetings instead of a General Competition Licence at $250 (?) per annum. I suggest we should all promote the cause of cheaper racing, if our sport is to survive. I have had an answer that MA is looking at the possibility of single event licences for historics, but all has been silent recently. Seems like a lot of other things, it has fallen in a hole. Incidently it was interesting that Hartwell Club told me to approach MA directly, on my own initiative. I always thought that the system was to have the rep. from the club take this sort of thing to MA. Makes you wonder why we join MA affiliated clubs. I won't be riding at the Southern Classic this year, as I haven't paid my dues to Hartwell so far this year, or renewed my MA licence. To compete would cost $55 club dues, $250 MA licence, $80 entry, $150 fuel and bike expenses. Seems to add up to $535 for two days fun, and it's probably worth it. However I'm retired and I have a tax bill that has to be paid, and even if I didn't I can do a lot of other things with the money. Time to retire from motorcycling as well I think, but I've recently heard of much younger riders in the same position, money wise, and who are giving up motorcycle road racing, because of the expense.

I hear all the comments about the cost of the licences and how we should change the rules to make it cheaper. Surely a better approach may be press for why is it $250 for a licence. Pulling out of the clubs may not be an effective way to bring on change, I am aware of many pushes to MA being ignored but surely a more constructive and concerted effort may be required. At the end of the day, perhpas the one event fees should be increased if the $250 can be justified. The HMRAV has instituted pre 1980 ride days at Broadford where a recreational licence can be used and everybody has had a gr8 time. The next one is 1 December 2002. Cost $77 Contact jdaley@pictureframer.net for details
