Alan has mentioned it is all about money.
From my perspective I dont agree, it is both. I am aware of many racers happy to front and compete hoping for a block of wood or a close race. The Hot bikes of course have money in them but is it a real issue in the pit lane?? As a sidecar gentleman I know I will never get near the Turner Bros. but I compete with others and myself at the back of the field and I am content.

Some years ago I used to visit Oszko and Mercer when they were A and B grade racers on Manxes. They used to spend just about every penny on racing. A valve was 15 pounds and a piston was 25 pounds. In those days I was earning about 15 pounds per week. The beauty of the thing was that you rebuilt the Manx once per season. The bike cost about 600 pounds, if I remember correctly.
Point is it all seems to match up with the cost of an Andy Molnar Manx these days.
If you are a serious racer I know you have to pay, but for what most of us are actually racing, the costs are silly.

Is your machine authentic or merely eligible?

Which costs specifically are silly?
What alternatives are there, anything cost money, a decent pack of cards is $5, a franger $1. Surely the act of getting out of bed results in costs, but Historic racers can choose what level of expenditure they want and pick their racing to suit.
Perhaps come the revolution we may get free racing for all comers.
