I learnt today that CAMS is environmentally conscious. They were apparently the big voice in getting leaded petrol controlled for racing use. Of course the fact that they charge $40 for a leaded petrol book wouldn't have anything to do with it. When you consider the risks of someone being affected by leaded petrol from a racing car, it looks a bit silly. In the seveties a study was done at the state school at the South Melbourne end of the King's Street Bridge. They took cast off teeth from the kids, ground them up and analysed them, to see if there was a relationship between mental retardation and lead levels. The results were inconclusive. To suggest the public would be affected by fumes from a racing car or motorcycle on a circuit is absurd. Skin contact by mechanics could be a problem, but plenty of them are capable of washing parts in leaded petrol. Point of all this is - when were we ever asked what a ban on leaded petrol would do to us? Apparently leaded petrol will be completely banned for racing from 2005. Yet the aeroplanes can fly around forever pumping out lead into the atmosphere. Nice to be environmentally conscious when you can make a dollar out of it.
