Some of the car guys really get upset when people try to bring replicas to historic meetings. Personally I don't understand this. Some of these cars cannot be identified as not being the 'real thing', they are so good. The argument the guys put up is that a copy devalues the real thing. I believe a Mona Lisa will always be valuable, it doesn't matter how many copies are made. John Daley mentioned to me a while ago that he couldn't understand anyone paying $15,000 for an historic motorcycle. I pointed out that his own ex-Stan Bayliss sidecar has a history, and is valuable.
Some people get upset by the thought of being blown off by an Andy Molnar Manx. I suggest there is two ways to go racing historic - purist and 'cheater'.
If you've got a genuine pre-62 Manx or G50, you're probably wise to keep it original - no Triumph five speed box or Jap parts. However if your bike is non-original and doesn't have a history, that's different - do everthing to it to make it GO!
If you've got one of George Beale's Benelli fours, bring it out next meeting. Replicas are OK with me. I don't understand what those car guys are on about.
