It would be good to workout where the older sidecars have gone

John, Why don't you start an Historic Sidecars Register, as a special interest group. You could do it as part of the Sidecar Riders Association or HMRAV. Every now and then I hear about one of those good old jiggers. It really takes someone to keep track of them, even if the register gets out of date a bit. At least you'd know a recent owner. I heard the Dennis Skinner Laverda is up in Sydney some where, and the Konig is around Melbourne (both you and my brother know where it is). Ken Horners immaculate Vincent is still about (in bits), and the Craig Brothers still have theirs, I believe.
Sometimes we all find ourselves with a bit of spare cash. It'd help to know where to look for something genuine. A while back I think you said to me you 'couldn't understand anyone spending $15,000 for a historic bike'. I think it depends on what you value. The old genuine outfits are worth paying for and preserving. They ARE part of our history

P.S. How would you like to buy Orrie Salter's Rennsport BMW outfit? It wouldn't matter if you couldn't do it justice. It'd be great to just get it back to race trim, and bring it out sometimes. I'd love to know where it is.

Orrie Salter's machine was factory built as a sidecar. The same motor was used in BMW solo racers, however I don't think anyone would cannibalise a genuine GP sidecar from the 60s. It was the sane sort of thing that Florian Camathias, and Max Deubel used to race on the IOM etc.
It'd be interesting to know where orrie's bike went, it was probably eventually returned to the factory.

Alan,
Unfortunatly there are some members of society who managed to get their hands on these outfits and butchered them beyond belief.
I know of a resto going on at the moment with an Urquart and its going to be something special when its finished.
The Honda outfit I passenger on was sitting for 20 odd years in a shed and with a bit of work done it has ended up a looking quite good, very competitive and is a very cheap project in racing terms.
Still trying to clarify its history a bit though.
Its a great idea to get a register going as Im fairly young and would like to get as much info as I can and pass it on to my grandkids as well as my machines.

If anybody has photos of them could you possibly email them to me and any info as well.

regards
Neill

Scott, I believe John said something about taking the 'register of sidecars' idea on board. It would be good to include both speedway and motocross sidecars in the register - there weren't too many of them. There were a few Wasps, and John Delima's JAP scramble outfit should be preserved, if it's still about.
People like Wes Brown, Dennis Skinner, Lindsay Urquardt, Jim and Jack Craig, and Don and Phil Barlow are probably still about and can provide history on road race outfits.
