I believe a lot of young guys don't know who the serious riders were in the past. There are a few A graders and International riders still around. Johnny Maher still rides a Manx, but in the early 70s he rode an A model TZ, the first to be fitted with disc brakes (off an XS650). A lot of other riders crashed at the end of the front straight at Calder trying to stay with him. He was known as 'King of Calder'. Greg Johnson rides Gyros BMW. He rode TZ750s for Jack Walters, with Ken Blake. He had the biggest crash at Phillip Island when leading a race and the motor blew up and threw him off halfway down the front straight at about 150mph. He also competed internationally. Now and then Bill Horsman still has a ride. He won the 350 Classic at the IOM a few years back. These were guys who I never looked like getting near in the old days - I had life membership of C grade. (They were really top line riders, similar to Troy Corser or Craig Coxhell these days.) We need a few more of these old A graders in historic racing!

The Oldies Meeting at Mac Park is really good stuff. There were a lot of the old 'names' there. Guys like Lindsay Urquardt, John Armstrong, Steve Oszko all top riders in their day, turned up. I even saw old Jack Heggie there and he was a top Triumph exponent back then! Eric Debenham had a ride - you should have seen him blasting the Yamahas off with the Vincent in the late sixties at Bathurst - really impressive. All blo*dy good riders in their day, and not so slow now. The bikes were also a LOT better than we usually see at historic meetings (sorry guys), there has been a lot of stuff turn up at the oldies meeting which I thought was gone forever. If you are into Historic racing, it's worth either telling lies about your age, or going there as a spectator. |
