Hello you lot,
I am not new to the historic motorcycle scene, having been in touch with VJMC for several years, but relocation has plonked me and my girl about 6 Km from Mac Park and we have decided to have a dabble with road racing. Our stable at the moment is 1977 CB750 K7 (for sale), 1976 GL1000, 2001 VTR250 (caths wheels) and a CB360 that we picked up for a couple of slabs and is being stripped and prepared for Club/Track days to see if we like the racing thing. We are going out this w/end to sign up with the club and find out more. I am hoping that this forum may be able to provide help and guidance to make this foray into the dark side of motorcycling smoother
cheers
Popeye (Street rider, handbag and matching heels)

Gday Popeye, Try sidecar racing as it is a hell of a lot more fun than racing solos. I am fortunate enough to have a very understanding partner who wants to passenger on our outfit. Although that is my part that she wants to muscle in on,so if you get an oportunity(?) to ride or swing GO FOR IT!!!you wont regret it. Anyway welcome to the wonderful world of roadracing and we all hope to see you out there real soon.
Regards Neill |

We have a couple of rooms and a fairly well equipped workshop, would appreciate a bit of notice to make arrangements. All visitors will have their brains picked and have to recite their favourite chapter of "Tuning for Speed" as after dinner entertainment .........and not tread on the cats.
Contact by E-mail or PM when you are coming down. |

Mr Popeye I wont be able to make it to tomorrows track day, but will certainly be there at next months. I am flat out setting up a P4 Honda 750 I just scored and haven't even got time to take the GSXR down at the moment. Catch up with Mick Engberg when you get there. He is sort of the clubs promotion dude. Tell him Ritchy told you to catch up with him, and he will be breathing my methanol soon enough . You will enjoy riding at Mac Park, great lot of people that turn up there, Good luck Ritchy.

Hi Neill, I have actually done a bit of swinging in my time. However that was on motocross outfits. We used to race Norton powered Wasp's. I think we had 3 in the stable at one time. Early model cantilevers and late model air bag. That was the best. We raced what was called the Western Centre back then. It included Heywood, Colac, Ballarat, Stall, Casterton, Mt Gambier Mortlake etc. The guy I raced with was Martin Northcott from Glencoe near Mt Gambier. We raced for nearly 7 years, and eventually took out the A grade first place. Also won many open races along the way. I can remember it as being fast and incredibly physical. I can remember travelling on most weekends all over the place.
I often wonder what happened to all the guys we used to race against. So, Neill, I have certainly done my time in Hell, cracked ribs, punctured lung, smashed shins etc.
I have swung on quite a few roadracers, but it never seemed quite as full on as the Wasp M/crosser.
So I guess I will just have to be a wuss and race post classic Honda 4's.
Cheers Ritchy.

G'day Ritchy, Did you ever race against John Armstrong or his son? John was a good roadracer in the sixties, later changed to commando engined wasps. |

Hi Allan, No, that name doesn't ring a bell. I was a slightly later generation. I started in 76 and finished about 81. Just before the next generation outfits started coming out. The names of some of the guys over Vic way were Colin Sargent, Bruno Bucerreli, Slippery Robinson and his brother, Smith (who was the Wasp importer), and many more whos names I have forgot. We even had Alec Cambell do a few m/cross races with us before his unfortunate retirement race. In between events I used to road race a Kwaka 1000,and before that a Honda 4 . I used to be busy and broke. Cheers, Ritchy. |

John Armstrong rode right through the seventies, however I seem to remember he was in queensland for a while. I actually saw the race on TV where Alec Campbell hit the fence at Adelaide Raceway. Silly stuff, and he was a nice guy. I'd been to his shop in Mt Gambier and had a talk to him. Saw him win at a lot of meetings. |

Gday Ritchy, Ive only ever ridden solos that was until last August at a rideday that HMRAV put on. I got an oppotunity to swing on Honda 750/4 outfit, well even though that only lasted till half way thru turn one at Broady the engine spat a seal covered me in oil, still I was hooked and after swinging at Mt Tarrengower and somehow walked away with a token first place,(we were the only P4 and everyone else on P3)I wanted more.I bought a P5(check bike registery)and are having a load of fun getting to know it. John you will be happy to know that Ive all the solos up for sale as I have to make room for maybe another outfit!!! I must admit Im looking forward to the Interclub next week at Winton as I havnt been out on the beast during a proper race yet. Also Ive got a new steerer so we will be starting from scratch as a team so Im not expecting much apart from to just finish each race in one piece,do that and Ive had my biggest win for the weekend. I like to think of passengering as skydiving "horizontal style". Although I still would love to give speedway sidecars a go,reckon that would be a blast. Do they have a training day for newbies???
Regards Neill

Neill, if you want a ride on a speedway sidecar give my brother doug a ring on (03) 9578 8750. He often rides at Broadford. You can see a photo of him on the PCRA web site |

It takes a bit of getting used to doing continuous right hand bends, but it's fast and great fun. The fence is a bit of a deterrent. |
