I really wonder what makes the officials involved in motorcycling tick? Last weekend Feb 14th - 16th there was (obviously secret)pre season practice for the Moto GP teams at Phillip Island.
How does anyone get to know when this is on? Is the dumb punter allowed to have a look?
Seems to me motorcycling in Australia has little enough following. It doesn't help when events like this are held in secret. Surely the reason can't be that the teams might learn something of each other's capabilities from the public accidently finding out the lap times? The times are actually published!! All the teams were there!!
Perhaps PIARC or whoever were worried they might have to have someone on the gate or pay a little bit more insurance?
Well BUGGER ME!! Why would I even take an interest in bl**dy Moto GP??
I'm not impressed at finding out about the practice sessions, from an MA newsletter too late to go there myself!!

maybe you should have looked at the motogp website as the dates for testing are there. then you could have joined the rest of us watching through the fence. but noone is allowed inside the track anyway. anyway why do you take an interest in bloody motogp? and is this enough to sway you to F1?

You were probably in the crowd with us on Gap Rd. Very difficult to tell who's who though, the bikes dont look the same.

I can't really say I've ever been interested in F1 . I think it's a dead loss. From a tehnology point of view it probably has some value, but when someone like Senna can get killed because some idiot didn't know how to modify the steering safely, you have to wonder how good those teams actually are!
As far as MotoGP is concerned, can you really claim that the actual teams present at Phillip Island really didn't know which bike was which? Seems a bit poor that the fans had to stand outside the perimeter fence! Might have generated a bit of goodwill to let them into the spectator areas?

You are expecting too much Al. What with cleaning up afterv the crwod, keeping the security away from the cheeky ones its all too hard. Anyway you should have been at the 80th anniversary of the Harley Club on that day anyway.

I really shouldn't have said that about F1. At least it is racing, and I sincerely believe that we should all support anyone who gets involved in speed competition. I personally enjoy watching the Tour De France, Speedway (Particularly Jawa solos), the trots, super karts, formula ford, group N touring cars, Formula 5000, the Porsche Cup, V8 Supercars, and all motorcycle racing except MX on an indoor circuit. Problem is the press coverage of all of these is zilch. Seems our media barons all went to private boys schools where only interests were cricket, football, and possibly tennis (How many times have you heard the words 'Mark Phillipoosis' on the TV news lately). There's an old saying - YOU DON'T KNOCK SOMEBODY ELSE'S GO . However the lack of coverage of important motorcycling events really irritates me. When did we last see a coverage of the Classic IOM TT ?? or InCA?? or Historic Assen??

HHH, I saw your message a bit too late, and anyway I don't think I could have got there from Benalla, and back for an appointment on Friday midday. The point I was making is that motorcycling doesn't have much following in Australia. It could be helped by publicising the practise sessions and accomodating the public. I know the teams pay for the circuit, and don't really want the wood ducks around while they're working. What I'm suggesting would help raise the profile of our sport in the eyes of the public. We might even get news coverage. It could only help!
The public could be excluded from the pits. But let's GET REAL. We can't afford to be prima donnas, even if the way things are done is common practice overseas. When did we last get over 100,000 paying punters to a motorcycle meeting? If we get the general public interested, motorcycling could have proportionately the same following here!
