Well done Mick,
The weekend was a roaring success. Could you send me Nuggets email address so that I can keep up with the latest in S.A. Certainly the beginning to an exciting new chapter in sidecar racing. Riding a track that was so well groomed and watered was a pleasure. My wife, Kathy, finished her first race without any dramas. Thanks to my caring tutelage, the top track, and the club babysitters, she is keen to get fitter and move forward in the sport.
It was interesting picking lines on a track that had only been used by sidecars. The usual pot holes that you come across when sharing a track with singles were non-existent. Because of this, power slides were safe and relatively smooth. A great option to have when running in a new sidecar enthusiast. I am absolutely sold on the idea of sidecar only events. A luxury we can only have if we continue to have big turnouts such as Morgan. I saw the occasional outfits out of shape, and one passenger running after his ride. The spectators loved the tabletop jumps. Some enthusiastic modern outfits were landing on the back ramp.
This weekend, I was able to talk to people from all facets of the sport. Compare the varied setups between the classes, even researched some new ideas for building my new XS650 motor. Darren Williams had upgraded his rotor/stator to one that doesn’t need a battery, can power mighty lights, and replaces his points and advance mechanism up top with an integrated electronic ignition directly off the crank. Brian Stewart’s stroked and bored XS had the neatest oil cooler fit out that I have come across. Road Trials was an interesting side of the sport that I hadn’t come across before. Sidecars like mine that are actually road registered, pack their lunch and gps and head out for the day.
One thing that I would love to see sorted out ASAP is the banning of stirrups for the passengers. Where the passengers hook their boot on a left hander is far more dangerous than if they used a correctly designed stirrup. By the way, until this is sorted out with MA, my stirrup will be used as a hand grip.
Regards,
Tony Powell
