A friend has a bike which hasn't being started for a few years, as far as I know there was nothing wrong with the bike but its just being sitting in the garage for a couple of years, I may buy it of him, but I want to know, does an engine rust inside if it hasn't being started???

questions

1. has the air filter been on it the whole time?

2. Is the entire exhaust still fitted?

3. Has it been stored inside?

4. Is it in a dry inland area?

if the answers are YES to all of the above, put a few drops of oil in the plug holes and
attempt to turn it over (in gear, rolling bike forwards gently)

If any answers are NO, good insurance is to get a top end gasket kit and rip the top off it and inspect/clean/repair everything, it may be a pearler but if it has a corrosion ring at the top of each piston compression ring, starting it straight up is going to be the worst thing you could do.

My 2 bobs worth, take it or leave it.

In short yes there can be rust inside if it wasnt stored properly. It can depend where and how it has been stored and two strokes are more of a problem than four strokes. The simple solution is to lift a cylinder head and have a look. You can be brave and do what most of us would and squirt some oil down the plug hole and turn it over and if all seems well try and start it and see what happens.
If you are going to race it you really should dismantle the motor regardless so you are sure of the condition of the motorcycle. At the end of the day you only get out what you put in and a few hours on the tools and a little money spent on gaskets is a worthwhile investment.
best of luck.
