With rumours floating about regarding the continued supply of ( very expensive ) leaded racing fuel, and the unexplained price hike by Shell to nearly $55(from $35 )for a drum of racing fuel 100 , has anybody investigated a new product on the market called TetraBoost. It's advertised in Just Bikes distrubuted by Pioneer Cycles Qld. It is supposed to be a genuine tetraethyl lead additive octane booster ( the same stuff used in the old Super petrol and modern racing fuels ). It comes in a 1 litre bottle, but freight is expensive. Thay sell it in a box of 8 bottles To boost BP 98 to 100 octane they reckon on using about 200ml. That equates to about $8 plus 20litres unleaded $22 = $30 Much cheaper than being ripped off $55 Can someone near Caloundra get some and try it and report back please.

I am a greenie and I think the removal of lead by everybody else is great. Imagine the mess we would be in without greenies, no trees, mushroom clouds of stinking air above every city, oil and pollution on every river, just like the Yarra. Toxic wastes anywhere. No frogs or mosies to remind us of nature, jee it would be great? |

John , although I am not what is commonly called a "greenie" , I am certainly environmentally conscious. I don't think the miniscule amount of leaded fuel being used by motor racing ( in context with world use of unleaded ,diesel and jet fuels ) has any great impact on health (unless directly ingested ) or environment. Latest research indicates benzine levels in unleaded fuels may be more harmful than the old leaded fuels causing acid rain in European countries. I think ozone depleting chemicals such as refrigerant gases and fire extinguishing agents has more of an impact on the environment than the amount of leaded fuels being used these days.If someone can offer some alternatives that does not cause premature engine failure or is not cost prohibitive to set up I would be interested in their ideas.

It is not definate that leaded fuels will in fact be banned. MA and CAMS are both trying to get exceptions to the ruling. If you want more info try the website of Environment Australia there is a section there that gives the current situation. Failing that contact MA direct who should be able to inform you.

Here is the link for the You must be logged in to see this link.:
Click here: Leaded fuels and motor and water sports
It contains information about who has been granted approval to issue Leaded Fuel Passbooks and allow the use beyond the 30th June 2005. MA is listed as number 20, so you will have to apply to MA to get the Leaded Fuel Passbooks and you should be able to purchase leaded fuel past 30th June 2005 |

I'm not a 'Greenie', but try to do the right thing. When one goes to parts of Asia, and sees the polution, the multitude of diesel fume spewing old trucks and smokey 2 stroke motorcycles, the unabated birth explosion, open sewers, land clearing, wood fires etc etc, I wonder about the leaded/ unleaded situation. Relevant or not, I saw a Tee Shirt the other day, Black with White lettering stating: Blah blah blah..What a load of ****! Don't crucify me now, not my fault I see beyond what's served up in the Press or television. Lucky me lives in Queensland, where our ever caring Premier will look after us. Nobody smokes here anymore/ Confiscate your trail bike for going into the bush/ no daylight saving to save us from Skin Cancer etc etc. And I was told God sent Jesus to save us! Hey, I like that Tee Shirt! Racer7 |

Has anybody heard about any possible dispensation as to the use of Av-Gas/Leaded fuels past proposed phase out date of 30th June 2005 ? What are the options on the table (or are there any ?).. is the use of methanol in P5 a possibility? I have seen no mention of anything regarding this matter in the latest (2005)GCR's (section 5.6 &1 3.9). Cheers Chris |

If you wish to coninue to use leaded fuels I suggest you keep an eye on the Environment Australia website for news and also write ot MA copying direct to Mr White, Mr Payne and Mr Martin expressing your concern regarding the status of leaded fuels. If you get no reply then write to the Board as individuals again copying the above mentioned gentlemen. You might also write to the Commission who meet usually in May who should be aware of the problem. I have tried personally several times and have not been able to get a definitive answer, to be fair I have had answers but they were not positive either way. The other thing that needs to be considered is the ruling that additives apart from two stroke oil and oil for methanol are not permitted unless they are added at the point of manufacture, this would make the additive mentioned earlier illegal. Good luck Alan Sidecar 21 WA |

News at last. One of our memebers who is associated with car racing has received advice that the Department of Environment and Heritage has extended the use of leaded fuels until September 30th 2006. For further information go to You must be logged in to see this link.
Pity our organisational bodies cant keep us as informed as well as the car peoples.
