C'mon, sharpen up kids, that was a Phat Weekend ! Love him or hate him ,Wayne Gardner did the business, whether it was on the Walmsley G50, or the T-Rex/RSC Honda. The beauty is, he got harassed all weekend, by a queue of eager participants including Mal Campbell, on the Ray Berry RG532 Suzuki, Dave Cole on Ross Graham's fabulous McIntyre G50, and Craig McMartin, on the jawdropping Horner Vincents. Other avid punters included Robbie Phillis, who struggled with machine dramas all weekend, but rode hard as hell when able ; a memorable dice between Ginger Molloy (AJR) and Bill Horsman (350 Kooistra Honda) in the weekend's penultimate event, decided in Molloy's favour by 0.11 seconds ( revenge for Bathurst !) and a sterling turnout by the sidecar teams. Guys, your effort was well appreciated, and to see Chivo back chasing the Vinnie on the Peterbilt TZ was a real thrill. Regardless of class, you must all return anew next time to keep the thrill rolling, it was great stuff. To be honest, I thought the competitor numbers were down, and maybe the crowd as well, but hey, it's no secret that the Island Classic is on Australia Day weekend each year, so the message is clear - use it or lose it ! With the Australian superbike series unable to get a gig at the Island, supposedly because of costs, we really must get stuck in and support this fabulous event while we can, as without the annual opportunity to get stuck in and cut loose at this great venue, the classic roadrace calendar will be much the poorer ! Congratulations and thanks to all punters who turned up this year and made it a ripper once again ! |
