Hi everyone,

I would like to prepare a 1981 Yamaha TR1 for P5 racing.
The stock, street frame on this bike is a back-bone style using the engine as a stressed member. It has a mono-shock at the rear.

I want to make a new frame for it. Either an Egli or a Trellis style.
Do I have to find photos taken in 1980-82 of a TR1 with one of these frames and copy it exactly?
Or can I just build any Egli/Trellis looking frame?

As for the mono-shock, will I have to go twin shock for P5?

Cheers,
Con

Con, before you attempt to build anything, it's best to first read thoroughly through the GCRs, or Manual of Motorcycle Sport. Then I'd be contacting the MA head office and running your frame theory past those who administer the Log Book scheme. There's nothing so disappointing as seeing the continual emergence of potential new participants who have received poor advice, or who build a bike to a concept, only to discover that it doesn't necessarily fit within the rules. I'm not saying this applies to you, Con, but please do your homework before you get too far involved, and life will be much easier for you as you prep your new racer.
Regards GD

Con,
You'll find the Rules will be a lot easier for you now that P5 has been extended to the end of '82.
Theoretically your frame has to be "visually indistinguishable from period
components".

And mono-shocks are period components.
