As you may have heard, motorcycle riders in Victoria have been slugged an extra $50 over and above their normal registration fees as part of the new budget. This $50 will be put towards covering the cost of serious accidents and crashes that motorcyclists are purported to be involved in and to help fund a bike safety campaign that nobody has ever heard of!

These proposals have all been put forward without ANY consultation or input from VMAC (Victorian Motorcycle Advisory Council) - our State's expert committee on motorcycling.

The time has come to make a stand and let them know how we feel. We are all voters and the time for saying "it won't happen to us" is over. Don't be complacent! It IS happening to us and it's happening NOW!

This is why you need to be there. Give up your lunch time so you can save your future.

Where: 222 Exhibition Street, Melbourne
When: Tuesday, May 14, 2002 from noon.

At 12.30 pm we will move towards Parliament House in Spring Street (route TBC) to hear speakers on the new anti-bike tax, consultation with stakeholders and the roles of VMAC and the MRA in these matters.

Netrider has invited Mr Cameron (Minister responsible for the TAC), Mr Geoff Leigh (Shadow Transport Minister) and an MRA Representative to address the protestors.

A couple of email addresses that are of use:
Shadow minister responsible for TAC: Geoff Leigh
geoff.leigh@parliament.vic.gov.au
Minister responsible for TAC: Bob Cameron

E-mail sent to Allan from Geoff Leigh MLA - Liberal Party:

From: geoff.leigh@parliament.vic.gov.au
To: Allan Greening
Sent: Wednesday, May 15, 2002 5:33 PM
Subject: Libs say NO to Bracks Bike Tax

Dear Mr Greening,

I thank you for your email dated 9 May 2002 in regard to the Bracks Labor Government's regressive $50 Bike Tax. I am pleased to inform you that the Liberal Opposition will remove this tax if elected.

THE LIBERAL OPPOSITION DOES NOT SUPPORT THE BRACKS BIKE TAX.

You may be interested to note that both the Opposition Leader Dr Denis Napthine and myself attended the protest on Tuesday 14 May, whilst the Bracks Government Ministers responsible for the Tax refused to address the rally and defend their $50 Bike Tax. Not only is the Bracks Government implementing a $50 Bike Tax, but they are undermining the role of the Victorian Motorcycle Advisory Committee and removing the influence of motorcyclists on high-level advisory committees. This is just the beginning of their Agenda to destroy motorcycling in Victoria and their Road Safety Tax may spread to motorists as well.

The State Opposition will promise to fund any future motorcycle road safety initiative through consolidated revenue or from existing TAC reserves - not a user tax. When the Government is operating a Budget Surplus of $765 million it is unreasonable to slug motorcyclists with a $50 Bike Tax to fund a $10.2 million road safety initiative This project should be funded from
existing revenues - not a special tax on a certain section of the motoring
community. This is discriminatory and unfair on motorcyclists and you have the support of the State Liberal Opposition.

The State Opposition is committed to constructive dialogue with the motorcycling community. A future Liberal Government I will reinvigorate the role of the Victorian Motorcycle Advisory Committee and not attempt to destroy this body as the Bracks Government is doing. This organisation was established by the former Liberal Government to offer direct access for motorcycling interests to the Minister and was a hugely successful organisation until Minister Batchelor started nobbling its powers and ignoring its recommendations.

Once again, thank you for your email and you can rest assured that the motorcycling community has the full support of the Liberal Opposition.

Regards

Geoff Leigh MLA
Shadow Minister for Transport
