I suggest you take a bit of care if you are going to use the pistons in a two stroke. A friend of mine seemed to believe he could make them, however I pointed out that the Japs had big problems with pistons until they spun-cast and forged them! One of them did Bill Ivy in. It grabbed and chucked him on his head. |

They are to suit my CB450 4 Stroke. Here is a link to a picture of the piston ring box if it helps. It says they are made in japan. Pistons by the same company also.

Scott, it is all new gear so it is not worn, however it is 4th oversize (1mm) which seems a shame as from initial appearances I think a re-ring would suffice, I may do that instead at this point, but I do have a spare barrel, so it's still not out of the question. What do you mean by a cardboard cromwell?

I agree with Scotty about keeping your old pistons in the motor and fitting new rings. If the old pistons don't have any cracks, and the sideclearance on the rings isn't excessive, you can probably use the old pistons. , measure the skirt clearance just below the oil ring. If you are less than about 4 thou of an inch, over the recommened max clearance you can probably still use the old pistons. If you can hear the 'piston slap' when the motor's running get a rebore and use your new pistons. Don't fit the new pistons into the motor without getting the cylinders bored to the correct clearance, and removing the uneven wear. That would just be a waste of the new pistons. About those Cromwell helmets. A lot of old w*nkers think they really look the part. One guy in particular, fell on his head of a classic bike at a rally, and was killed. Have a look at how many riders died of head injuries in the 50s. Pudding basin helmets are for dills, just like drum brakes, which compound the problem! |

jeezas Al,i think John should measure a bit further down, like around the bottom of piston skirts,on front/rear thrust surfaces, thats where the wear will show up on honda pistons,if John is going to race it,bit of "extra" clearance won't hurt?,(at least the old pistons will be work hardened!)and i don't think we need concern ourselves about helmet choice,as it will have to comply?,was that a nasty dig at drum brakes too,(pox on disc's)Mick |
