Hello,
Just got my 1st bike a CB350 wich I'm planning to rebuild as a cafe racer style road bike, possible historic racing in the future, its a bit of a project having sat in a shed with the engine out and partialy dismantled since '79.
I'm in need of some parts for it like pistons and timing chain tensioner, also looking for any of the cafe bits like clip ons, tank and seat.
Any advice or assistance gladly welcomed.
Steve

Come along to the HMRAV meetings, check web site. There are a few riders with those machines and I am sure they will help you. |

Hiya Steve,
Nice one. I am also building up a 350K4 racer, its been a long story (if only I had more time........) but has been rewarding. Check out "CB350 - the saga" under the post classic section. Best of luck, C U out there, if I ever finish mine off! Cheers, Ben.

Thanks for the welcome,
been doing lots of reading on the net, hopefully it won't take too long to get it running and rebuilt.
HMRVA meetings would be good to go to, but, they're in Broadford and I'm in Yarra Junction, fair trip for a meeting. |

Sorry, I thought you were talking about 'club' meetings as in, in the club rooms talking about gerneral club type business. A 'race' meeting is another story and completely acceptable to travel to for a day or weekend even.
The last few years I've been to historic winton and have camped over night.
My Dad raced historic cars in group J+K when I was younger and we would travel to Collinggrove hillclimb and A.I.R. in SA to Amaroo in NSW and Geelong spints, Calder, Sandown, Winton, Mt Tarrengower, Phillip Is. ect. ect. and road rallies all over Vic.
So, yes to go to a meeting at Broadford is no problem at all, I just thought to go to a meeting at a club room type situation one evening might be a bit much to start with.
OK, my mistake.

Dive in at the deep end and build it for Historic racing. There are some great blokes out there who will help you along the way , you just have to find out who they are and ask questions -- it's the only way to learn. There are plenty of them being raced , so much so that I reckon we could just about have a class for CB 350 s all on their own ( just kidding ) Even in stock form the engine goes quite good but obviously goes better again with go fast bits. I have just re-built mine. Use pistons from a Kawasaki GPZ 750, takes the bore out to 66mm near on the full 350cc. Cam chain tensioner. If it's the rubber wheel , get rid of it and replace it with the cam chain idler gear out of a Kawasaki Z 900. A good used one is ok , just take off the black rubber cushion and modify to fit into CB holder. I need one myself so if you find 2 , let me know. Ken. |

I'm thinking more along the lines of racing, do I need a road licence to race?, you see I don't have my bike licence as yet.
The gpz pistons sound good, are they a easy / cost effective route to a bit more go? It's got to be bored what ever pistons I choose.
Got the rubber wheel type tensioner. I was thinking of making some replacement wheels on the lathe out of delrin, a hard engineering plastic used for bearings, some people are using it for suspension bushes in race cars!
Any one tried it or heard of any one with experience making alternate tensioner wheels like nylon or steel?
Thanks for the tips Ken.

GPZ piston / ring set will set you back near on $300 pair( we are talking about a twin aren't we ? ) Genuine Honda oversize would cost close to that, but are heavier. There is some machine work required to the dome to suit combustion chamber. You get an extra 2mm bore with a lighter piston = has to go better. I would give that material a go to make the wheel but what about the centre bearing. As for a license , yes you need a racing license, contact the Victorian club for details. Ken. |

Hey Steve, You are more than welcome at any HMRAV event,meeting-club or race. As for getting a licence, check out the You must be logged in to see this link. website for details on how to obtain a racing licence although Ill add that you must be a current financial member of a club affiliated with MA.ie HMRAV,Hartwell,Preston etc Probably better off waiting till you get your bike close to going racing as I dont see value for money in getting a licence 6 months b4 u start racing, although Id still join a club asap. As Ben said b4 check out the CB350 saga,it is a good read...

Any one got one of the slipper type ? so I could get some ideas of dimesions and how they work so I could make a similar device for my own emgine. I've got a few tools and love to tinker. Pretty much read all the stuff on the web, I think.
I'm thinking about getting some NOS pistons from ebay in the US, 1st oversize and us$50- the price sounds good, anyone had experience with this sort of stuff?

US$50 is good. Retail, Honda want about A$160 each, no rings. Chopper Imports in NSW is a good source for rings etc. Racer7

Ebay has worked fine for me, I have bought several items from both the UK and the USA and have only had one minor hiccup. If you are worried I believe that you can get insurance of some sort regarding the non delivery of purchases. The most important thing is to be 100% sure that what you are buying is what you really expect it to be as there is no possibilty of returns. Hope that helps you.
